My heart hurts

I used to have so much to say.

Triplets, Preemies, NICUs, Cranial Bands, Cleft Lips, Cleft Palates….Yep, once upon a time this blog was a stepping stone for others walking our same path in life; a stepping stone for others facing the same challenges. It almost feels strange that the days of shelling out my "learned wisdom" about these topics have come and gone. It's like we've reached an age and a place in life where we're just….normal.

There's a lot of happy in that, I suppose. It IS sort of freeing not to be an 'expert' on these things anymore, because I HAVE actually forgotten how to efficiently fill 18 bottles a day or how the valves and pieces fit in Colton's Habermann Bottle. And I literally don't remember how often I washed their helmets. I don't.

You might even say I've become complacent with this 'uneventful' life of mine.

Until tonight.

Tonight I was painfully reminded that our story is not over…and that my job as a mother will forever be a million times harder than teaching could ever be.

I have 3 kids. They grew together, were born together, and are raised together. They are triplets and there's a lot of 'sameness' that goes with that.

But the reality is that one is different. (Yes, my intellectual self knows and appreciates that  they are ALL different, but one feels it a little more than the others.) He feels it in ways they can't yet comprehend. And I would literally take back every insecurity and every flaw I've ever had about myself (and there are a lot) to take this away from my Colton.

We were just sitting around the dinner table having homemade banana splits, partaking in our usual line of "how was your day" questioning. It begins with whoever thinks to ask first; tonight that was Ethan.

"Hunter, how was your day?"

"And what was your favorite part?"

"And what was your worst part?"

She, in turn, asks Colton the same questions.

If we're keeping track, he had a good day. His favorite part was painting birdhouses and eating ice cream. And if I'm being honest, he had a hard time thinking of a worst part.

But before he moved on, he very abruptly lifted up his upper lip, exposing his top teeth. Ever so innocently, he asks, "Mom, do my teeth still look funny? Are they still crooked?"

Trying not to appear flustered, I very 'breezily' said, "Well let me see. Um, yep. They're still a little bit crooked, but they still look really good to me. Why?"

"Because 'B' {his best friend} makes fun of my teeth sometimes. He says they look funny."

And just like that- it happened. He realized he's different.

If I were a superhero, my powers would be remaining calm and collected when all I want to do is fall apart.

I shot a look at Brian basically pleading in silence for him to say something because I wasn't sure I could, without crying. I needed a second to compose myself.

"Hey bud, your teeth are a little bit different right now, but pretty soon, they'll be all fixed up. Don't you worry about what other people say about them, okay? Everybody's a little bit different from each other and what's important is that you know how special and handsome you are."

This bit of saving advice gave me enough time to well away the tears and interject my own wisdom.

"Colton, here's the thing. You're actually kind of a superhero, you know. You're only 5 years old and you've already had 3 surgeries! (I'm including his ear tubes) What other kid can say that? 'B' can't say that! Nobody I know is as tough as you are. When you were born, you had a hole in the roof of your mouth and Dr. Hurst fixed you all up! He fixed your lip and your palate (brief intermission here to explain what his palate is) and pretty soon, he's going to fix your teeth too!"  {And breathe….}

"But why was I born with a hole in my mouth?" (Said in a tone that showed more concern with the why HIM part than the hole in the mouth part.)

Again. time felt as if it had slowed almost to a stop. His eyes and his little self were waiting for an answer. And I wasn't sure I had a good one.

"Buddy, I don't know why. Maybe because God knew you were tough enough and brave enough to  handle it.

Not entirely sure he was convinced, he at least allowed Brian and I to sprinkle our hopeless bits of wisdom upon him and the other two. We went back and forth with all the things you're supposed to say when your kids are feeling hurt; all the things you tell kids about tolerance and acceptance and treating everyone with kindness even when they look different. We talked about how Hunter's eyes didn't work so well and she needed to have glasses, etc.

And in case you're wondering what his demeanor was this whole time, you could almost say he was  unphased. And yet, he was thinking about it. He thinks about it. Something in that moment made him ask about it.

But just like that, the game moved on.

Colton looked over at me and asked, "Mom, how was your day?"

I smiled and said, "It was a good day."

"What was your favorite part?" he asked next.  "Um, watching you play outside and having ice cream with you."

And I knew it was coming…..

"And what was your worst part?" he asked.

{what to say, what to say…}

"Right now." I said. "Hearing that you feel a little sad about your teeth hurts my heart."

The game continued until everyone had had a turn and almost as abruptly as it began, they were asking to be excused from the table. I've never been so eager to let them leave. Brian sent them upstairs to get ready for bed and I just sat, my back to everyone.

And I cried. Silent,  guilty, hopeless tears. And Brian knew. He sat down beside me and said all the things you're supposed to say when your wife falls apart.

I can never shake the guilt that he's a triplet and yet, he's the only one who has to deal with this crap. I can never shake the guilt that perhaps something I did or didn't do during the pregnancy caused his cleft lip and palate. I can never shake the guilt that I can be there for him forever and I can fuddle my words left and right when he needs a pep talk, but I can never take it away. I can't take away the surgeries and the pain that are yet to come.

Amidst my sobs, Brian so eloquently reminded me that maybe I was looking at it from the wrong perspective; he reminded me that Colton is going to lead the way, that he's going to shape someone else. He's going to teach someone about tolerance; and through it all he'll have his brother and sister to have his back. Maybe THAT's why he's a triplet.

Sometimes I like it when he's right.

Colton,

My wish as your mother is that you will realize the strength you have. That you will be courageous enough to stand tall when you're feeling down or when you're feeling different. My hope is that you will continue to rise above it and that you'll be able to see the handsome young man we all see. That you will find comfort in knowing that you're never alone. You are my hero. And you have been for almost 6 years now. I love you bud.

Now THIS is love.

[Side note- I wanted to add to this story that neither Colton nor any of us are upset with his friend, nor do I think his friend even meant it harshly. I am pretty confident the whole conversation was spurred more by a 5 year old's curiosity than intent to be mean. Kids are just honest. Sometimes too much. ]  :)

Confession Time

The kids had preschool summer camp today and had a great day. It was so blessed hot (think 105*) when I picked them up that I really wanted an ice cream from Baskin Robbins and was pretty sure they'd be up for it too....

Before we left preschool however, I noted that Colton was holding his crotch.

"Hey bud, you need to go pee?"

"No mom. Well, yes. But I just want to go pee pee at your house."  (He only refers to it as MY house, never his or ours. I find this kind of funny.)

Well I can understand his desire to pee in the comforts of our home and we don't live that far from preschool anyway. So we buckled up and started driving. And then I started thinking about Cherries Jubilee ice cream and totally forgot about the whole pee thing.

"Hey kids, you want to get an ice cream cone?"

"YEAH!" (Score!)

So we all file in, and everything is peachy keen. They make their way down the displays and finally select Mint Chocolate Chip (Hunter and Colton) and Vanilla (Ethan.) {Side note-Really? Vanilla? There are 31 flavors and he selects vanilla?? So not my kid. }

Anyway, I pass off 3 little cups of ice cream and as we sit down, I note that Colton is in some serious discomfort. As in, he might pee right then, right there, ON the CHAIR. He's almost out of breath as he struggles to hold it in.

And suddenly, I remember the pee thing.

"Excuse me sir, you don't happen to have a restroom here, do you?"

"No, sorry."

(While I secretly think they really DO have a bathroom, I know that he's just doing his job. I also wonder if he'll wish he'd just let us USE that 'secret' restroom when he's mopping up my kid's pee 18 seconds from then.)

"Okay, thanks," I mutter.

"Kids, grab your ice cream cups and come with me!"

And without the fuss I was sure that would cause, they followed. Like perfect little ducklings.
I got them to the car, where I opened up the driver side door,  shielding us from traffic on a main road.

All right, buddy. I need you to pee right here."

"Right here, mommy? Right here?"

"Yep. Right here."

And he did. On the running board and everything.  :) But as you might imagine, he felt like a million bucks after that! I pulled up his little pants,  handed him back his ice cream, and back INTO Baskin Robbins we went! To enjoy our ice cream in the cool, air conditioned comforts of the ice cream shop!

Did I feel a little bit guilty? Yeah. But only a little. But then I just pretended he was just a little desert jackrabbit peeing near my car, and I felt much better about the whole situation. I mean, it was just pee...and for what it's worth, I DID explain that we were only peeing there because it was an EMERGENCY and that we wouldn't normally pee in a parking lot.  :)

Sometimes, you gotta do what ya gotta do.

So tell me, what would YOU have done in that situation? :)

Brought to you by the 'Soaking' Series. And yum, yum, yummy pizzas!

FROM THE MOUTHS OF BABES....
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Friday night while Brian and his dad and sister were at the UofA / ASU game, Nana and I were home with the kids. We'd decided to make cookies and watch Prep & Landing. I gave the kids each about 5 mini chocolate chip cookies. When they asked for more, I said, "That's all for now guys."
Well Colton did not approve of this answer and proceeded to SMACK his hand down on the table shouting, "But I WANT one. I WANT one!"
Calmly I say, "Well you might want to remember how to ask nicely Colton. Maybe something like, "Mommy, may I please have a cookie?"
He continued to pout and smack his hand for a few minutes and then finally walked away.
About 2-3 minutes later, Colton joined me in the kitchen.
He walked right up to me and in the most gracious manner ever, smile and all and said, "Mommy, I pwease have a cookie?"
As much as I didn't want to give them more cookies, I really wanted to reward him for asking so nicely. So I gave him one more and said, "Thank you so much for asking so nicely, Buddy!"
He took a bite and then turned away from me.
As he walked away, I hear him whisper in disbelief, "It WORKED!"
So. Flippin. Cute.
Your next laugh is brought to you by 'THE SOAKING SERIES' by Colton Bunch.
We were at the mall, playing by the play land, when Brian announced that it was time to go. Colton, clearly unhappy about this, says to me tears falling down his little cheeks,
"Mom, I'm soaking dis-pointed." (disappointed)
Later, getting into the car as we were leaving the mall parking lot, he exclaimed that he was "STILL soaking dapointed." (yes, that's how it sounded)
Then again, as I tucked him into bed tonight, he told me that he was "Soaking Dis-pointed again."
"Why?" I asked.
"Because I can't play anymore."
Oh my...little boy you sure do make me smile.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dad and Genise came over last night to visit and they brought Papa Murphy's pizza! How have I lived here this long and never had a Take and Bake Pizza before? SO yummy! But what's even better were the three individual 'Make Your Own Pizzas" for the kids.

Let's just say that three kids can make the EXACT same pizza in three VERY different ways.

 ETHAN'S
 COLTON'S
 HUNTER'S

Hunter made hers with almost adult like precision....sauce, spread like a champ, then cheese, then pepperoni- spread out evenly, baked to precision.

The boys were less eager to get started, but with some encouragement, they obliged.

I made the ULTIMATE mistake with Ethan however, by spreading the sauce on his pizza for him. HOLY CRAPPER BATMAN. I came darn near close to ruining his life by doing so. I ended up having to 'scrape' the sauce back off of the dough. He then proceeded to dump, in one fell swoop, his cheese on top of the dough and finished by plopping about 10 pepperoni onto the pizza. In one pile, mind you. But you know what? He was happy with his cheese 'bread.' He knew exactly what he wanted and didn't want and I made the mistake of assuming he wouldn't really have a preference. Lesson learned.

See? Sauce on= unhappy little  boy.

Sauce off? We're good to go!

As you can see, he enjoyed his sauceless pizza.

Colton was pretty agreeable throughout the whole process. He also made his pizza to his liking and ate it like a champ. Leaving behind the crusts for his mommy.  :)

See the crusts he left for me?

Our big person pizza was yummy, yummy, yummy. And so was the wine I drank it down with!
The big finale came with the stamps they brought for the kids.

Stamps on paper? Fun.

Stamps on skin? Frickin awesome.

Now all we can do is hope that they really are 'washable'. Come one, Melissa & Doug, don't fail us now.  :)

It was a great Sunday evening. The kind that make you feel like extending your 4 day weekend into 5. :)

Little Jag

I wish I'd gotten a picture.

Of the cat.

The little cat.

The little, tiny, baby cat that found his way into our garage tonight.

The little, tiny, baby cat that Hunter immediately named "Little Jag." (To her credit, he looks JUST like Jag did when he was a kitten.) In fact, he looks exactly like this:

The minute I saw him prancing around the garage, I got that 'oh crap' feeling...because I KNEW she'd adore just seeing him in all his tininess, yet I also knew she'd want to keep him. (And I also knew Brian would leave me forever if I so much as uttered any sort of phrase beginning with, "But he's so cute honey.")

So I let her play with him for a few minutes....and it took only that long before she started, in her most sympathetic voice, "He's so cute mommy. He lives at his friend's house. Does he, mommy? I think he doesn't have a home.' And then it hit me- SHE IS ME.

She and Colton played with the kitty for a few minutes...calling out "Come here Little Jag!", "Come here kitty!"

And then Brian came out....and that's about where the story ends. She may think her Daddy walks on water most days, but at this moment, she definitely did not. He came out grumbling something about "a pest" and how he wasn't staying here and proceeded to shut the garage, leaving 'Little Jag'...well, alone.

It was evident in mere seconds how crushed she was. Her little face wrinkled up and tears started flowing. She was painfully aware that he was out there 'without his mommy' she kept saying. She was so worried about this little kitty. (Which by the way, Brian tells us does live in the neighborhood. I think he may be lying but if he is, I prefer not to know.

Oh, Little Ami. This is not going to be the last animal you want to 'save'. There will be oodles. I love that you have a good heart at 3 and a half years old.

The ABC's of Colton

So, I didn't actually 'announce' it yesterday because, well, I wasn't sure I was actually going to even pull through on day one. But, I did. And now it's day 2. And so, I'll go ahead and put it out there. I'm attempting a blog-a-day. Again. :) Wish me luck.

So for some fresh new takes, I'm throwing in an ABCs of each kid....little known and sometimes greatly known facts about our Biggest Boy. Heeeerrrrree we go. Day.....2. {Sigh}

U-Underwear. He thinks he needs to change them every time he goes to the bathroom. Whether they're wet or not.  :)

Y-Yeeee-aaaa-uh. One of my absolute favorite Colton sayings.  :) His version of 'yes' or 'yeah'

Z- Zoo. It's a favorite place, what with all the "PeePocks" (peacocks), the "jeee-rafs", the "mingos"(flamingos) etc.

He'll hate me someday. His dad already does.

I know, I know. It's mean. I shouldn't post these. He'll be mortified someday, right? Yeah, well I'm his mom. It's my job.

And yes, I'll let it be known that Brian disapproves of the fact that I not only allowed our little boy to walk around the house in my heels, but I also photographed it. I needed to state that. You know, for the record. :)

But I still think he's darn cute and more importantly, I was pretty damn impressed with his ability to walk in stilettos. Clearly, he's been paying attention to his mommy.

(Coolest kid ever?
Ummm...in these heels, it's debatable.)

Strike a pose

I love you, Colton. AND your sexy stilettos.
