The fact that you put so much thought in to how you would explain it is just as important as what you ended up saying to them. That's what makes you guys good parents. You didn't mess them up. Death is something that everyone eventually has deal with. Your kids just got an earlier lesson than you probably thought they'd have. Think about it this way, it wasn't just a lesson in loss.
